STATEMENT FROM ROBERT LYNCH

September 14, 2001

Dear Friends & Colleagues,

Let me express how saddened we are by Tuesday's events and that our thoughts are with everyone who was touched by the tragedies that took place.

We at Americans for the Arts extend our deepest sympathy to the families and friends of the victims. We also thank the many members and patrons who have expressed concern on behalf of our New York City and Washington, D.C., staffs. We want to let you know that all staff from both our offices were unharmed by the attacks.

Out of respect for the loss suffered by our great nation, we have postponed all programming scheduled to take place September 14 and 15.

This has been an extraordinary week for everyone and particularly emotional and poignant for us as an organization with offices in both affected cities. For me it also serves as a reminder of how important our work is in our collective attempt to foster things that make the world a bit more beautiful and help foster a bit more dialogue, and that help keep us all a bit more human.

As America struggles to come to terms with its enormous loss, we are again reminded of the critical service the arts provide to our communities. Terrorism is an act of destruction, but art one of creation; our challenge in the days and months ahead must be to continue to empower American communities with the tools, resources, and support necessary in their efforts to create.

We are currently working to connect with our members and friends in the New York area and will soon share information about ways in which you can help. We will remain in close contact and have designated Anne Canzonetti (202.371.2830, acanzonetti@artsusa.org) to respond to any questions, concerns, or related information.

May we find strength in our collective efforts to achieve the vital work that lies ahead.

With warm regards,
