At Creating Common Ground, participants and presenters discussed creating sustainability and systemic change for arts education in our schools and communities. How do we work with all the decision-makers; build infrastructure for teachers and teaching artists; and secure stable, ongoing funding? At Common Ground, educators, artists, and administrators discussed securing great arts education for all students, now and into the future.

Diversifying Arts Education
Aaron Dworkin founded The Sphinx Organization to diversify classical music. It has since become a national leader. Dworkin discussed the state of diversity in the field, the impact of diversity on arts education, and how to achieve greater diversity in your arts education programs.


Changing the Environment
Pinellas County, FL. In an era of arts education cuts, Pinellas County is enjoying more funding. Jeanne Reynolds and Ray Smenner spoke about building the strong coalition of local arts folks, community leaders, school administrators, and teachers it takes to put down roots for arts education. Avoid their pitfalls and replicate their success with step-by-steps and examples.

U.S. Department of Education's Arts in Education Programs (MDD and PD). Carol Sue Fromboluti spoke about how to receive an arts education grant from the U.S. Department of Education (USDE); Elaine Mariolle about innovative partnerships and economic development; and Jan Spencer de Gutierrez about collaboration across school departments, schools, and communities. They discussed how they earned, spent, and succeeded with USDE support.

Learn the tools from both Cooper and Dr. Haithcock, her district's superintendent, that will help you grow these relationships in your district.

On the Agenda of the School
What are the responsibilities of our teachers and our principals in keeping the arts alive? How do we put the arts on the agenda for school planning? Roger Dearing has been an arts education champion for decades—as a school leader, as a volunteer, and as a musician. He shared with us how to make arts education a long-term priority for your schools.

After years of full-scale arts integration, these schools show improvement in just about every area. At this research 101 primer, we leveraged this and other research for your best programs and best messages.

Building Teaching Artists: Teaching artists have become de rigueur in arts education partnerships, gaining national attention for their expertise and recognition of teaching artist field. This workshop built the capacity of arts organizations to bring art to kids by building the capacity of teaching artists. Creative systems that provide professional development, respect, and sustained support to embed teaching artists into the public school system and tap our students' creative energy.

Arts Education, Federal Support, School Subjects, Teachers, and You
Kristine Cohn is the Department of Education's spokesperson for Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin, and she spoke about how the arts improve achievement in other subjects and remain core to No Child Left Behind, as well as what this means for teachers—everything you need to know for educated, lasting public-school partnerships.


Building Better from the Inside Out
Donna Power works with communities, regions, and states to build broad-based local support for K–12, arts-integrated education. She builds broad community advisory boards representing schools, arts and youth organizations, businesses, and decision-makers. With her experience, and that of Sally Kriska who creates and implements lasting education change in Ohio, you too can build arts education advocates in all community sectors.
