2012 executive director & board member symposium

The Americans for the Arts Board Chair and Executive Director Symposium is a one-day leadership development program for board chairs and executive directors in the local arts field who seek:

  • training to strengthen their role as an executive leader in their organization and community and
  • improved skills to cope with the many challenges that face nonprofit arts organizations.
Providing instruction and skills-building exercises led by field experts, this daylong symposium will be held in advance of National Arts Advocacy Day.

History of the Local Arts Agency Movement
Robert L. Lynch, President & CEO of Americans for the Arts
  Mr. Lynch will discuss the local arts agency (LAA) movement of the last 50+ years and the impact of LAAs throughout America.
  Public Value of the Arts
Jonathan Katz, CEO of National Assembly of State Arts Agencies
  Mr. Katz will highlight ways participants can talk about the public value of the arts and how the arts impact a community.
  Reframing the Arts Locally
Mary McCullough-Hudson, CEO of ArtsWave, Cincinnati, OH
  Ms. McCullough-Hudson will detail how an 83-year-old organization transformed itself to better serve the regional broad interests of people in its region and promote the benefits that the arts bring.

Roundtable Lunch
with Michael Killoren, Director of Local Arts Agencies and Challenge America Fast-Track, National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)
  Participants will learn about the many grant programs for local arts agencies available through the NEA including Art Works, Challenge America, and new initiatives such as Our Town.

Case Studies
 

This session will feature case studies and discussion on community development, the creative economy, and cultural districts. Presenters will include:

  • Abel Lopez, Associate Producing Director of the Gala Hispanic Theatre;
  • Kerry Adams Hapner, Director of Cultural Affairs at the City of San Jose Office of Cultural Affairs
  • Andy Vick, Executive Director of the Allegheny Arts Council.

Leading in Public
 

The afternoon will wrap up with an in-depth discussion on leadership and ways executive directors and board members can work together.
