Civic Engagement

The arts have proven to be a potent catalyst to engage people in civic concerns. Americans for the Arts aims to increase civic dialogue as well as provide already committed, passionate citizens with effective tools to have their voices heard. Americans for the Arts’ Animating Democracy, with the help of local partners and inspirational funders, provides opportunities for engagement in the arts experience, offering an entry point to those who have not felt access to the civic realm before. In the last two years alone, using a specially-designed online software tool called Capwiz•XC™, Americans for the Arts has facilitated the transfer of more than 140,000 e-mail messages from private citizens to their elected officials. Insightful funders can become involved in these efforts to broaden people’s perspectives using the arts, and can make significant changes in cultural understanding by supporting the arts—one of the most powerful resistances to cultural ignorance.
