John Bryan
John Bryan is the founding president of CultureWorks—the arts and culture service and leadership organization for Richmond, VA. CultureWorks was formed by a 23-person task force that included executives from Fortune 500 companies, major arts organizations, municipal governments, and other community organizations. Prior to CultureWorks, Bryan spent over two decades initiating and heading the fundraising program for Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts: a 2,500-student school that is now ranked #4 among U.S. News & World Reports’ rankings of 214 arts schools. Bryan’s own artworks have been featured in solo exhibitions in New York City, Nashville, Richmond, and elsewhere. His writings have included six books and hundreds of articles in such publications as Sports Illustrated, Parade.com, and Delta SKY. His honors include the James River Association’s Guardian of the River Award, the Richmond Jazz Society’s VAJAZZ Award, and the Richmond School Board’s Outstanding Contributions Award. Bryan holds degrees of B.S. from Davidson and M.A. and M.F.A. in painting from Vanderbilt and the City College of New York.
