In honor of National Arts and Humanities Month, Emerging Arts Leaders/Los Angeles (EAL/LA) will host "Creative Conversation 2009: Leveraging Networks", a symposium for arts professionals early in their careers or those new to the field. The annual event brings together members of the arts community from across Southern California to:

- Network with colleagues from government, nonprofit, and for-profit organizations
- Collaborate with peers on common organizational or professional goals
- Receive career-planning resources
Emerging Arts Leaders/Los Angeles is a professional network of arts advocates formed to support and cultivate the next generation of creative leaders in Los Angeles County by providing them with opportunities to expand their peer network, share resources, and improve their job-related skills through professional development. As the Los Angeles County chapter of Americans for the Arts Emerging Leader Program, EAL/LA is designed to address the specific needs of individuals early in their careers or new to the field, but is open to all individuals who have an interest. Arts administrators, cultural workers, artists, nonprofit managers, art/college students, and arts educators are all encouraged to participate. Tickets are $10 if purchased before RSVP information, and updates on Creative Conversation program sessions to follow.

Creative Conversation 40/40 |
| Description/Notes: |
| Join 40 arts professionals over and under 40 to talk about leading the arts in a new era of shared leadership. With four distinctly different generations now in the workforce and leadership coming from top to bottom and bottom to top, the need to bridge the generation gap among members of the arts community is essential. The rise of social media, lack of programming aimed towards young adults, increase in number of arts administration BA and MA programs, and discrepancy in the school of thought between generations all provide fodder for discussion. The evening will include food and drinks, networking, and a facilitated discussion between emerging and veteran leaders. |

The Arts Movement in Louisville |
| Description/Notes: |
There is an increase in the interest of arts equity for local visual and performing artists, emerging artists, arts educators and many multidimensional crafts persons. The arts are in high demand in the business community, schools, churches and youth centers. The wealth of creativity is evidenced in the thirst for dialogues about arts being accessible to all populations. The Arts Council has greatly impacted the arts network through a technology development of a LOUISVILLE ARTSBOOK USA comprehensive real-time artist directory in cooperation with Gordon Communications and the University of Louisville College of Arts and Sciences. This project is the result of "Artist Creative Dialogues." The historical paradigm is consistently being challenged. The expansion of Louisville's "Great Creative Community" has tremendous economic potential.
The location of "Creative Conversation is at the Heyburn Building, Suite 1600, Louisville, KY 40202. Please come into the building from the Broadway side door entrance. |

Changing Practices - Is 501c3 a Sustainable Model? |
| Description/Notes: |
Nonprofit business models are changing and may need to change to adapt to the current global economy. What does the new nonprofit look like? How has the economic recession impacted this at an accelerated pace? How can emerging leaders not only survive but thrive in this new environment? We will begin by hearing from a diverse panel of arts professionals. After gaining the panel's perspective, attendees will breakout for a chance to participate in smaller group discussions. We'll come back together as a large group to share feedback, ideas, and strategies. Networking and conversation to follow at a local downtown Bethesda restaurant.
Directions are online at https://www.writer.org/contact/index.asp. Metro: Take Red Line to Bethesda stop. Exit metro via elevator. Turn right on Wisconsin Ave. Cross the street when convenient. Walsh St. is less than a 10 minute walk from metro.

Bridging the Generation Gap in the Arts |
| Description/Notes: |
| As the upcoming generation takes on more responsibility in arts organizations, the need to bridge the generation gap among members of the arts community becomes more important. Why the Arts are Critical in our Schools |
| Description/Notes: |
The purpose of this Creative Conversation is to increase the awareness of supporting the arts in our schools as a tool for effective learning among K-12 students.
This will be achieved by presenting best practices of arts in learning initiatives currently integrated in WJCC and York school divisions, showcasing WHRO public broadcasting educational projects and experiencing exemplary arts in education programming.
Audience will leave Creative Conversation with an increased awareness of how arts are used as a catalyst for learning and knowledge of arts in education advocacy organizations.
The timeliness of this session is paramount given potential of cuts to arts in education programming with our current economic climate. Preserving arts in education programming is essential to our youth, schools and community. Research reveals:
- Arts education impacts cognitive development
- Students who participate in arts programs demonstrate improved academic performance and lower dropout rates
- Arts education nurtures creative thinking skills necessary in today’s economic environment
This Creative Conversation’ target audience includes parents, educators, elected officials, school board and business community members. |
