About the PAN Council

The PAN Council is an elected advisory body to Americans for the Arts and assists in developing policies, programs, and resources to promote knowledge and understanding of the broad field of public art. 

The Council works with Americans for the Arts staff to develop PAN programs, increase and improve resources and tools for the field, and promote public art best practices.

PAN Council Election Results Are In!

The Public Art Network is pleased to announce Jimmy LeFlore has been elected to the PAN Council!

Starting in 2013, LeFlore of San Antonio, TX, will take the seat of two-term departing Council member, Martha Peters of Ft. Worth, TX. Special thank you's to Marth and her dedicated hard work and commitment in advancing the work of PAN over the past six years! LeFlore recently worked with PAN in planning, developing and leading the PAN Preconference in June 2012 in San Antonio. LeFlore directs the public art program for the San Antonio Department of Cultural and Creative Development.  

PAN Council Member Responsibilities

Members of the PAN Council provide visible leadership across PAN Council projects and activities, including conferences, convenings, listserv dialogue, and project committees. 

Council members are expected to attend two in-person meetings: one mid-year winter meeting typically held in January, and one summer meeting typically in June that is held in conjunction with the Americans for the Arts Annual Convention. The PAN Council also participates in regularly scheduled conference calls. 

All expenses (travel, hotel, meals, telephone) associated with in-person meetings and conference calls are the responsibility of Council members or their employers; it is encouraged that nominees to the PAN Council discuss with their employers these additional responsibilities as it involves both personal and professional time and resources.

PAN Council Eligibility, Nomination, Election, and Term of Office

Individuals are eligible to serve on the PAN Council if:

• s/he is a member of Americans for the Arts; 
• maintains their membership throughout their term(s) on the Council; is active in the field of public art as an artist, public art administrator, urban designer, architect, landscape architect, art historian, curator, or professionally employed in an allied discipline directly related to public art; and 
• is employed in the field of public art during tenure on the Council. Should an elected Council member take a position outside the public art field, s/he will be asked to resign from the PAN Council.

The composition of the PAN Council is interdisciplinary and strives to represent a professionally diverse range of approaches to public art as well as reflect the composition of the nation’s communities with regard to ethnicity, gender, age, and geography. There are 15 members of the PAN Council who are nominated and elected by the membership of Americans for the Arts. 

Nominations are annually reviewed by the Council. Nominees who are not elected to the PAN Council may be invited to serve on a PAN project committee. One member of the PAN Council is also a member of the Americans for the Arts Board of Directors.

Elected PAN Council members serve a three-year term that is renewable once; a second term on the Council is subject to re-election on the annual ballot.
