Dr. Robert S. Martin

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is an independent federal agency that fosters leadership, innovation, and a lifetime of learning. IMLS supports all types of museums, from art and history to science and zoos, and all types of libraries and archives, from public and academic to research and school. IMLS expands the educational benefit of these institutions with grants that encourage growth, creativity, and excellence, as well as leverage substantial state, local, and private resources. IMLS plays an integral part in assuring that Americans have access to high quality museum and library services by championing the valuable role these institutions play in society and by placing a national spotlight on the ways in which they help build communities.  Dr. Robert S. Martin, a distinguished library professional and scholar, became Director of IMLS in July 2001. Under his leadership, IMLS continues its service to the nation’s 122,000 libraries and 15,000 museums in the pursuit of imaginative programs and partnerships that educate, enlighten, and ensure that America’s past is preserved and its future flourishes.
