Ralph Burgard began his career in 1951 and became one of the earliest executive secretaries of the nation's first local arts council, the Arts Council of Winston-Salem. He was a founding member of Community Arts Council, Inc. and former secretary of the North American Assembly of State and Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts and the New York Cultural Council. He has received numerous awards for his innovative work in cultural and educational planning.
