Americans for the Arts Presents National Award for Leadership in Arts Fundraising to Atlanta Arts Leader

Washington, DC — July 18, 2004 — Americans for the Arts today presented the 2004 Michael Newton Award to Beauchamp Carr, executive vice president of the Robert W. Woodruff Arts Center, Inc., a nonprofit organization representing five of Atlanta’s leading arts institutions in residence at the Center, at its annual meeting in Washington, DC. The Michael Newton Award recognizes exemplary leadership skills and extraordinary dedication to supporting the arts through a united arts fund, which is a combined effort of agencies to raise money on behalf of separate arts institutions in the community.

“With a passion for history and years of experience in the nonprofit field, Beauchamp’s work ensures that the arts will be available for many generations to enjoy,” said Robert L. Lynch, president and CEO of Americans for the Arts. “His leadership in arts fundraising, as well as community involvement, makes him one of the nation’s top arts administrators and a strong advocate of Atlanta’s arts community.”

Carr has been with the Woodruff Arts Center since 1977, and he currently is the executive in charge of development. He is a strong supporter of the arts and has been described as a “walking archive” of the city’s arts community. For 12 years he was the president of Atlanta Landmarks, a nonprofit organization that owns and operates the historic 4,500-seat Fox Theater, and continues to serve as a trustee and executive committee member. Carr is also a member of both the Funding Task Force of the Metropolitan Atlanta Arts and Culture Coalition and Americans for the Arts United Arts Funds Council.

He received his B.A. degree from University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill after serving for three years in the United States Army.

Americans for the Arts is the leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts in America. With offices in Washington, DC, and New York City, it has a record of more than 40 years of service. Americans for the Arts is dedicated to representing and serving local communities and creating opportunities for every American to participate in and appreciate all forms of the arts.
