MEDIA ALERT: Wynton Marsalis to Deliver Lecture on Arts and Public Policy
WHAT: Americans for the Arts’ 22nd Annual Nancy Hanks Lecture on Arts and Public Policy is a leading national forum for arts policy, intended to stimulate discussion of policy and social issues affecting the arts. The lecture provides an opportunity for public discourse at the highest levels on the importance of the arts and culture in relation to our nation’s well-being.
WHO: World-renowned trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis is the Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center and Music Director of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Marsalis will deliver the 2009 Nancy Hanks Lecture on the Arts and Public Policy. Marsalis will speak about the essential value of culture in the recalibration of American identity.
Marsalis began his classical training on trumpet at age 12 and made his recording debut in 1982 at the age of 21. He has since recorded more than 30 jazz and classical recordings, which have won him nine GRAMMY® Awards. Marsalis is also an internationally respected teacher and spokesman for music education, and has received honorary doctorates from dozens of universities and colleges throughout the United States.
The evening will include a special performance by Marsalis and members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) will introduce Marsalis.
