The first national public service ad campaign aimed at promoting education in the arts debuted this week and will air through February on cable TV and radio.

Sponsored by the Americans for the Arts and the Advertising Council, the ads first appeared Sunday on Bravo, the film and arts network. It offers parents a wealth of practical information on how to involve the arts in their children's lives and directs them to www.AmericansForTheArts.org, a newly expanded website.

VH1 has also committed to airing the ads, which offer humorous portrayals of what children miss when they lack an arts education. They end with the tag line: "The less art kids get, the more it shows. Are yours getting enough? Art. Ask for More."

The ads were created for free by GSD&M, an Austin, TX, ad agency. The cost of the campaign is being paid for through a $1 million grant from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation of New York. The ads feature the voice of actor Alec Baldwin and young actor Grant Rosenmeyer from the hit movie The Royal Tenenbaums.

More than 290 arts organizations in the United States, including the Miami-Dade Cultural Affairs Department, are helping promote the campaign.
